If you are a fan of Adventure Time and like card-based games such as Magic the Gathering you will love this game from Cartoon Network and the development team from D3. The theme of this iOS title is based on Season 4, Episode 14 of Adventure Time, when Finn agrees to play Jake at a game of Card Wars. The gameplay here is solid and you can tell the Developers at D3 put in a great deal of thought and time into the game mechanics. Rounds are sometimes imbalanced but that depends largely on your deck, the cards you acquire while playing (or crafting), and the randomness of your draw. If you are only looking at playing the occasional game while on the bus or at home you will likely enjoy this game experience. Where this game becomes awesomely competitive and disastrous at the same time (more on the latter in a moment) is in the Tournament play. In short, you are placed into a pool of 100 other Card Wars players for an opportunity to win the one-of-a-kind Black Card if you rank #1, a unique Tournament card if you place in the top 2-10, or an assortment of Gems and coins if you rank lower. Each tournament lasts 2-weeks. If you become an avid Card Wars player like I did (1-2+ hours a day) you quickly realize that Tournament Play is your calling. It’s an opportunity to play against other decks generated by other players. To save time, the Card Wars AI plays as your opponent. This is hugely rewarding as it pits you against some very challenging decks from around the world and helps you learn how to craft a better deck of your own. What’s hugely disappointing about Card Wars is that the game is riddled with bugs, particularly in tournament mode. Connection Errors, when they pop up, are relentless and they often happen during the last few hours of a tournament when you are battling against others to improve your ranking and receive a rare tournament card. The battle wheel will also occasionally lag (on my iPhone 6+) causing you to miss crucial attack and defensive opportunities. And what has become even worse is that now my deck hand often freezes so that I cannot place cards on the battlefield. I have lost at least a dozen battles these past 2-days alone due to my deck freezing. There are other smaller nuisances I have learned to adapt to but suffice to say the above are the most frustrating. I have attempted to contact D3’s support page on a couple of occasions to help them diagnose the issues but they seem rather clueless. The worst was the second and last bug report I submitted where I received the following: "Hello D3 Go! Customer, Thank you for contacting D3 Go! Customer Support. Your account has been automatically flagged by our system for exploiting Deck Wars. As such, we are unable to provide any assistance for this issue. Best Regards, D3 Go! Customer Support Team (EDG)” The above correspondence from D3 is what convinced me to throw in the towel. Despite having invested a modest but significant sum of $20 into this game I would have expected more than sheer dismissal from their support team and a completely ridiculous accusation by them. I don’t even know what it means. In summary? Save your money and do not support this title. The bugs make a potentially awesome card-based battle game not worth the frustration. Or play it with the caveat that it’s entertaining for a few moments here and there - and don’t subject yourself to the frustration of the Tournament Play. Or perhaps do, with fair warning of the bugs that you’ll encounter. And to the support team at D3? I would like to send you one rather sour smelling toot from Jake and a raspberry from Finn. :-P
